Whyville is a virtual community with visitors from around the globe. It's a place where you can play games, earn clams [Whyville's currency], chat with friends, and even throw mudballs at people! But out of all the tomfoolery that happens there, kids are actually learning. And, having fun doing it!
We all know that lots of website claim to have "fun learning games", and we all go to try them out, and then we all say, "Wow. This was fun. I learned a lot. Now I will use this information in real life and make myself a better person," Right? Yeah [please note the sarcasm]. I think kids have more fun when they know that winning this game will have some benefits, like a prize of some sort. That's what draws kids to Whyville's games, they all raise your salary. Every Whyvillian has their own bank account, where they can deposit and withdraw clams, and also make interest and a salary. You raise your salary by playing games, which once again brings me to the point that kids actually WANT to play these games. And they've taught me a lot. About gravity, the laws of physics, and how to eat healthy.
Besides earning clams, you can also spend clams on face parts, which you use to decorate your avatar [no duh]. Kids can submit designs to the mall, which they make on their own, and then earn clams if they sell. This encourages creativity. I've made some face parts. They're really not that good. But it boosted my self esteem from all the comments, got me some quick clams, and it was fun. Isn't that all a good website needs?
Making friends is also a big thing in Whyville. Like I said, people come from around the world. Each day, around 1,000 people join. I've made friends in France, Canada, Bangladesh, and even my own city! With your new friends you can talk, trade, make beauty contests, or have a projectile fight!
